Free to Move!
For many years I would wake up early so that I could go for a walk before Paul left for work and the kids would not be alone. My goal was to do 2 miles in 30 minutes.
I was bookin’! (at least by my standards) When I started jogging at one point, my jog was slower than my walking pace.
Years of striving to live in a calorie deficit to lose weight had me convinced that it didn’t count if the heart was not pounding, the sweat pouring, and the muscles hurting. I was counting steps or calories burned for every activity.
These walks were good for my mental health as prayers were offered, days organized, and plans made while I walked. Being out in fresh air was also beneficial. Physically, there were some good things happening, I’m sure.
But I’ve learned to let go of the militaristic attitude. Yes, I have more time now, but beyond that, my attitude has shifted. I no longer need to be pushing my limits every morning. The nuances of movement are becoming more important. The goal has shifted. Strength. Confidence. Flexibility. Peace. Less stressed. Happy. Accomplished. More energetic. Fighting decline. Contentment. Improved sleep. Balance.
So now exercise, or movement, is much more enjoyable. Each day’s goal could shift. Depending on energy levels, time available, location, I could be biking, mowing, hiking, lifting weights, walking, gardening, or on the elliptical chatting with my gym buddy. ☺️ And interestingly, my numbers are shifting nicely. Muscle mass is up and body fat is down: without the militaristic attitude. I like that trend.
There’s freedom, glorious freedom! Perhaps, at some time in the future when I’m training as a runner (secret life goal: complete a marathon) I’ll get more organized and intentional about working out. But for now, at this point, I’m content to heal my relationship with movement by allowing lots of variety and joy to lead the way!
